In December 2023, I gave a talk to 40 members of Wesleyan University’s “Division III” (a.k.a. STEM faculty) about what a small group of us studying AI behaviors and practices have learned over the preceding year.
I had a few big points I wanted to make, but the biggest is that faculty bear a responsibility to continually monitor the generative AI situation, so that students are not the only ones bearing the burden of making decisions about when use of AI is appropriate. As I told the faculty, “you cannot legislate your way out of this one.”
